In recent weeks, Mizzy and I have heard from several folks back in the States who are worried about us, or worried about visiting us. Given the barrage of bad news out of Mexico lately – especially the misleading and inaccurate San Miguel kidnapping story Dateline recently broadcast – their concern is understandable. But consider this: Mexico is a big place, and lumping the problems of Nuevo Laredo in with relatively tranquil places like San Miguel or Puerto Vallarta is no more reasonable than saying Detroit's crime problems reflect life in Omaha, Nebraska, or Summerville, South Carolina. So, in the interest of fair and balanced reporting, I thought I'd share this eminently sensible piece written by American journalist Linda Ellerbee.
